Andrew Emil
As an artist Andrew has been changing the face of house music for over a decade. His releases on some of house music most elite and diverse labels have sculpted a sound that clearly defines his frame of reference at the same time outlines a cadence to his eclectic taste in Chicago House Music.
Andrew started his urban musical career at the age of eleven. At this time Andrew was a formerly trained Concert Percussionist, obtaining a chair in the local Kansas City Symphony. This instruction lead to many group endeavors with various different bands and performances. Armed with an increasingly larger interest in more progressive music would lead Andrew down a different path in the early nineties. Influenced by Jazz, Rock, and Soul records he had heard he decided orchestral music was right now, not the way. Added was also the discovery of House Music in High School one night when he was walking past a Deli in Downtown Kansas City. Astounded by the sound and musical freedom it allowed this music changed his whole outlook on composition.
Having noticed that many of the productions that were his favorites came from Chicago, he decided that if he wanted to get closer to this sound he would have to immerse himself in the culture that created it. After launching Crowd Control Inc., an event production company, Andrew and associates played a large role in setting off events across the nation in the attempt to expand/promote dance music to a larger audience. Relocating to Chicago in nineteen ninety-nine is when Andrew turned the next chapter of his musical journey. This is where Andrew found home in the streets and sound of the metropolis.
During his studies for his Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition and Audio Design/Engineering at Columbia College Chicago (2006) he wrote and produced a string of releases/remixes for such labels as: Seasons Recordings, Phase 3 Music, Gallery Music Group, Roam Recordings, Farris Wheel Limited, .dotbleep, Industry, Market House Meats, and OM Records to name a few.
Andrew has shared an elemental role in such production groups as: Broadway & Wilson (Andrew Emil + Jeff Bloom), Uptown Tones Andrew Emil + Pat Nice), The Sunday Scoundrels (Andrew Emil + Chad Mitchell), and most recently After Monday (Andrew Emil + Gene Farris).
In December of 2001 Andrew and brother Erik decided to start their own imprint deemed: four play music. Using this as a facet for creatively controlling work released from the label put Andrew in a position to take upon his unique experiences and paint the canvas of the catalogue with his colors. In June of 2006 four play music released the first project (compilation album) under the new contract with Esntion/Warner Bros. A full-length album featuring unreleased work from the four play music catalog as well as new productions from Mr. Emil himself. In 2009, four play music is proud to present the release Dirty Sole feat. jOHNNYDANGEROUs debut album. “Candy Wrapper” the first single is due to be released Sep. 2009.
Andrew’s work has been featured and reviewed in such magazines as: XLR8R, Big Shot, URB, BPM, and Billboard. In 2002, some of his performances were featured in the documentary Deep House Movie – a John Long Production.
Through his productions and performances (including live shows in San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, and San Jose, Belgium, England, Holland, France, and Canada) Andrew has had the honor to perform/remix or be reworked by such artists as: Gene Farris, Roy Davis Jr., DJ Jes, J.T. Donaldson, DJ Pierre, Lillte Louis Vega, DJ Dealer (Pound Boys), No Assembly Required (Justin Long and Dan X), Gene Hunt, Glenn Underground, Home and Garden (Tim Schumaker), Dajae, Andre Harris, Derrick Carter, Demarkus Lewis, Ron Carroll, Ricky Bradshaw and Thomas McIntosh, Diz, Paul Johnson, Rick Garcia, Naked Soul, Pat Nice, Mr. Egg Germ Band, Brett Johnson, Curtis Harmon (Cei-Bei), Audio Angel, Lance Desardi, Steve Bachman, Angel Badell, Chad Mitchell, and Jeff Bloom, as well as various other session work, ghost writing, and recording.
